eBay, the American multinational Internet C2C corporation which owns Magento and ProStores has announced that it will be shutting these small-business eCommerce products in early 2015.
This closure is expected to affect about 10,000 small-business customers who rely on these services to power their online stores.
According to Magento marketing head Craig Peasley, the company is going ahead with these cuts so that it can focus on the two current Magento products that are enjoying success.
Right now, the Magento Enterprise Edition (EE), as well as the Magento Community Edition (CE), are having more success and targeting bigger/more sophisticated online sellers than Magento Go and ProStores were able to.
Also, Magento previously removed dozens of employees from its payroll and let them go as it realigned its focus. However, the company does not expect further layoffs that are related to the shutdown of the business.
As part of the closure plan, small businesses will have time until 1 February 2015 to move their online shops to other eCommerce platforms. Nevertheless, eBay has put up a variety of resources online so that customers can decide what to do next.
Magento also hopes that some of these customers will opt to upgrade to the Magento Enterprise or Community Edition products.
The company also recommends that if this does not make sense, then the affected individuals could migrate over to its former competitor BigCommerce.
This is because BigCommerce has a successful story of store migrations as well as existing integrations with other parts of eBay and PayPal.
According to BigCommerce President Steven Power, his company has previously handled eCommerce migration from other eCommerce platforms for around 12,000 businesses, which included 6,000 former ProStores customers.
