Magento is an open-source eCommerce framework that was launched by Varien in 2008. Acquired in 2011 by eBay for over $180 million, the platform has become so successful that everybody is talking about Magento currently. Today, Magento has overtaken the open-source world literally overnight. Circa 2013, is by far the most well-known software platform in the entire eCommerce world. Various top-rated companies around the world are choosing Magento as their platform of choice and many more are also following suit. Due to the numerous advantages and extremely customer-friendly nature of a Magento Store, companies that have moved to Magento have been richly rewarded for this step.
The free community edition is the one platform that has been downloaded the most. However, the more pricey Enterprise Edition has found favor with Enterprise level companies like Krish Technolabs (A Gold Partner) also. However, the functionality that the Community Edition comes along with means that a significant percentage of users find it useful for their needs. These customers include new and start-up companies to large and medium-sized companies that have thousands of products arranged into elaborate categories.
Today, Magento has beaten Zen Cart and even Presta Shop to the top. Talking about Zen Cart is a PHP-based open-source platform that branched out from osCommerce in 2003. Although Zen Cart is an extremely good platform to use, it does not stand up as a match for Magento. It is a fact that Magento is not meant for beginners and requires someone who is an expert in website development. However, Magento has some capabilities that beat Zen Cart hands down. Features such as email template management, iPhone capability, product comparison, and multiple-store support are some features that make Magento more acceptable to users.
Comparing Magento to yet another open-source platform Presta Shop, we find that PrestaShop is a good choice for small and medium-scale enterprises. However, only the English as well as the French versions provide full support though it is available in more than 40 languages presently. Hence, although Presta shop comes as a good choice, it can’t win against Magento’s layered navigation, unrestrained as well as complete access to the code, and even its modular structure, which finds considerable favor with top eCommerce merchants. Furthermore, easy navigation, product filtering, and lesser time executed for searches make Magento preferable for users.
To top it all, Magento’s official support team makes Magento extremely attractive. Previously, the development of eCommerce was subject to the development of the Internet and related technologies. However, the Internet revolution has made removed most technological limitations to eCommerce. The open-source of Magento has gone in its favor and thus Magento is now the undisputed leader in the eCommerce arena.
