USPS API Update: Information for Magento Users

The United States Postal Service [USPS] API is commonly used by Magento eCommerce merchants around the globe for calculating USPS postal rates. The USPS has released an update to its postal rates API effective 24 January 2014. These details on the API changes are provided on the USPS website.

As these changes were being announced, Magento reviewed and tested the proposed changes with the latest versions of Magento Enterprise Edition, Magento Community Edition, and Magento Go. According to the results obtained from these tests, it is not expected that Magento Merchants will experience any issues with the AP update.

While the API changes won’t disrupt existing services, they will cause a previously announced price change increase, as well as changes to some of the services offered. Accordingly, some of the changes are documented as below:

  • Price increase details as announced in the Sept 25 2013 USPS press release require no action. Accordingly, customers will automatically see the updated rates.
  • Standard Post service has now been removed for zones 1 – 4, for both rates and labels.
  • Customers who rely on this shipping method should ensure that this will not have any negative repercussions.
  • Additional services that are offered by USPS include “Priority Mail Express 1030 AM delivery” and “First Class Metered.”. These services are not automatically supported by Magento.

Magento recommends that customers contact the USPS directly for additional questions about the USPS API or associated service changes.
